This is an interesting and enjoyable account by a junior officer in the cavalry of the AOP. It was written in the 1880s and was no doubt influenced by other memoirs. He begins as a squad commander and ultimately rises to Colonel of the First PA Cav. The work focuses on battles and there is little detail about daily life, training, or other such concerns. Some of the battle recounts are very exciting and overall this is a quick, enjoyable read. Two things to note though. First, this officer is very enamored of Sheridan, almost absurdly so at some points. Also, this memoir repeats (and is probably cited to support) erroneous reports that Stuart's cavalry was supposed to support Pickett's charge by attacking the Federal rear, particularly the ludicrous idea that Stuart's "random" artillery shots in various directions were a signal to Lee. Despite this, it is a fun work with some interesting info and anecdotes.Product details
