On the heavily forested planet of Lumin, the Network has slept, dormant, for over six hundred cycles. Only a select few remember that it resides beneath the crust of the planet, waiting, and for them, the battle for Lumin's future has raged in the shadows. When Mia Jayne's path crosses with an ancient volume in the Archives of the Order of Vis Firmitas, the battle moves from the shadows into the light. Compendium opens up a world of knowledge, and, for the first time since arriving at the Order, Mia has the key to reclaim the freedom she lost. To do so, she must choose between her conscience and her heart. Conceived against an ailing world of fantastical beauty where long-lost technology tips the balance between extinction and survival, Mia must remember that there is always a choice, and that makes all the difference.

Winner of the 2015 National Indie Excellence Award in Fantasy, silver medal in the 2015 Readers' Book Awards in Fantasy, and a finalist for the Independent Author Network's Book of the Year in the Science Fiction, Fantasy and First Novel categories.

The concept of the planet Lumia is very neat and different. It was strong on technological details, which ended up (in my opinion) being one of its weaknesses. The main character, Mia, used computer/tech vocabulary and concepts too readily and casually considering that those things were part of the distant, lost past and completely unknown to her (and almost everybody else). Although doing so let the story clip along, it felt like kind of a cop out at a cost to character development. I didn't much like Mia. The conflict with a senior cleric was left shrouded in mystery a bit too long. By the time the cause was revealed, it seemed silly. I also feel like I missed some information about the Cleric vs. Druid situation.

All that said, there was something compelling about the story. I will give the next book(s) a try when they are available.

Compendium Artifacts of Lumin Book One Volume 1 Alia Luria 9780990840305 Books Reviews

It had a good premise to start off with. I liked the earthy side mixed with a bit of sci-fi. I felt like it dragged on a bit in the middle. I could see the plot twists coming from a mile away in terms of the betrayals. I also thought the main character behaved extremely immaturely for someone who was supposed to be in their 20s. I also couldn't see how ***spoilers*** she could go from sainclair being abusive to an I love you so very quickly at the end...that just seemed wrong....the order itself manipulated her into a damned if you do damned if you don't situation and by the end what was being treated as an unholy betrayal was simply forgiven by the mission and everything was rainbows and unicorns again....I really thought it had the makings of something great, but I feel like there should have been more explanation of the backstory or history and less dragging on and on in the compound. It was a quick read but it never really reaches it's full potential.
This is such an amazing book. More people need to know about this series! I love many different kinds of books but I am constantly on the search for unique novels that give me the feels. Harry Pottery, Narnia-esque books in which you feel yourself falling into the pages and being surrounded by giant words telling a big story. This is one of those books for me and I can't wait for the next one. The talk of the forest and trees made me feel green, and the characters were well thought out and developed. The story started immediately, which may have put some people off, but hooked me immediately. The world was described so well and so beautifully, I wish it were real. I can't wait for next book, please hurry!
As others have said, this book does have a slow start. It starts in the middle of dire situation with no background, so you don't know who the 'hero' is and who the 'bad-guy' is. However, when the story turned to Mia and her adventures I was captivated. Trees turned into houses (not like the ones we built when we were kids), with tree built hearths, and bridges built by training the limbs how to weave together - all very imaginative.

I grew frustrated with Brother SainClaire, he seemed a little like the bad-guy in Oliver Twist when Oliver asked for "some more". Once all the truth was out, I enjoyed his change of character.

I do wish there was more clarification of Mia's feelings about why she took the vow so readily. It almost seems like she did it out of a sense of duty, not desire.

Still, a good read. The plot was well thought out. Lovers of fantasy/sci-fi will enjoy the story.
I was not confused at start, if you pay attention to the dates on start of chapters, you understand one is pre history of novel--an explanation of how the book and key got where they are. I did find the character to been more of a teenager in thought and action then the 21 she was supposed to be. really got tired of her childish jump in before you think, and suffer the results. I also hated the long explanations , over and over again. should have given this a 2 rating. but I read the whole thing... flipping though pages of worthless chat. again, I find this book should have been listed under teens. not adults.
I would definitely recommend this for airplane rides, long waits and stuff like that. It's fast paced and engaging, highly readable. I liked how the first couple chapters seemed to have a theme of environmentalists vs. climate change deniers although that seemed to become less relevant as the story went on- there will probably be further development on that theme in later books of the series (which I probably won't read since the book wasn't to my personal taste, but I'd consider it if I was travelling). Though it's nearly 500 pages, it goes quite fast- I think it took me about six hours total (spread across several days). Not sure if that's because the print is large in the paper version, skewing the page count, or if that's because the writing is simplistic.

I was not expecting the book to be Young Adult but it basically is. Very easy reading, not a lot of difficult themes or concepts, young and naive protagonist. The protagonist acts like she's in her late teens although I think she's supposed to be in her twenties, more on that later. I see now that the genre is "New Adult & College." Upon googling it, it seems like this genre is basically YA but with slightly older protagonists who have sex or maybe swear sometimes? There's no sex or anything that one might consider "inappropriate" in this book, and as I said the protagonist acts like a teen, so it might as well be YA.

Many of the plot points revolve around miscommunication and characters not having or asking for full information on certain things. This is a pet peeve of mine unless it's done in a comedic way or it's done very well (like in Romeo And Juliet). There are also a lot of parts where readers can easily figure out things that the main character doesn't figure out till later. It's not completely predictable- there were a couple plot twists that surprised me. It just made it kind of hard to respect the main character's intelligence. Some people are more bothered by these things than others, so if this isn't already a pet peeve for you, you probably won't be bothered by it.

I was also bothered that it was the supposedly "good" organization that was withholding important information and then judging people harshly for acting on their incomplete understanding of things. That's clearly not fair and I have trouble believing organizations are "good" when they do things like that. I don't like seeing unfair things in fiction when they aren't acknowledged as such. Also, at one point a character (unnamed to avoid spoilers) gets "punished" for a wrongdoing by being put in a leadership position of the effort to fix the matter. That seems like complete nonsense. If someone demonstrates incompetence you don't promote them to a leadership position when they've never had one before.

I'm not sure how their measurement of time was supposed to work. It seemed like "lumins" (I think I spelled that right) were supposed to be equivalent to years, but it says the main character is 23 lumins old when she definitely acts more like 16/17, especially when it comes to her love interest. I get that she's supposed to have no experience with romance due to a migratory lifestyle, but even then she should have a bit more emotional maturity just from having more brain development and social experience with friends, family, etc. It also has 650 lumins pass between the events in the first chapter (or is it a prologue?) and the events of the majority of the book, but there's continuity with the SainClair family and stuff like that, in fact there are only a few SainClairs left. If you look back 650 years in real life, everyone who successfully reproduced has ridiculous numbers of descendants and there's no keeping track of them. So the genealogical aspects are implausible.

Aside from these things, it's definitely a fun read. Would recommend to people who like YA and people looking for a light read to pass the time.
