Battle For Manhattan Bruce Bliven Jr 9781258505820 Books Reviews
Most histories of the American defense of Long Island and Manhattan focus on the fighting on Long Island. The fighting on Manhattan is generally covered in a few paragraphs or, at most, as part of a short chapter. This short book (106 pages of text) remedies this deficiency to some degree. It discusses the British landing and victory at Kips Bay, the successful short term American defense at Harlem Heights and then very briefly the eventual retreat of the American forces from Manhattan.
The book discusses the reason why Washington chose to fight at Harlem Heights (to follow the order of Congress to defend New York and to gain some sort of victory, however limited, to boost the morale of the army and keep it intact) and provides some information about American officers, such as Thomas Knowlton, who are often overlooked. There is also a brief mention of the weapons and tactics used. A most interesting feature of the book is the linkage of events to current day landmarks (at least current for 1955, when the book was written). There are also quite a few black and white reproduction of period paintings of New York and reasonably good maps on the inside front and back covers. I particularly liked this placement as it made referring to the maps quite easy.
This book should be of interest to those interested in the history of the Revolutionary War and to New Yorkers.
